During the 1906 earthquake and fire that devastated San Francisco, Louise Boudin saved her business by rescuing the distinctive "mother dough" yeast that had been used in every loaf of the bakery's sourdough bread since 1849.
How did she do it? History does not record the details. But we're pretty sure she only had an hour to face a dozen challenges in the bakery and escape with her life – and the mother dough!
